An easy step-by-step guide to choosing stock, testing alignment and printing correctly.
Choose the right label paper
Check whether your printer uses inkjet or laser technology. Use stock that explicitly supports your printer type. Select the label size that matches your project.
Check the manufacturer’s exact stock number where available, and match the label widths, heights, gaps and margins.
Create your label design
Choose a sheet template, then personalize text, shapes, colors, graphics and borders in the editor. Use a readable type size and keep important details inside the cut line.
For address lists or multiple products, import a CSV to fill one label per row.
Export a print-ready PDF
Download PDF for paper or sticker stock. The pages use the physical dimensions of the selected template. Use SVG when you need a scalable source or PNG for general artwork.
Set your printer to Actual Size
In the print dialog, use 100% or Actual Size. Turn off Fit to page and any automatic scaling. Check that paper size matches the exported PDF.
Before using expensive adhesive paper, print one test page on plain paper. Align it with your sticker stock against a light source.
Fix alignment issues
If printouts consistently drift horizontally or vertically, adjust the sheet margins in the Page tab. If the drift accumulates across rows, verify your row and column gaps.
Printer feed tolerances vary. Small test adjustments can be necessary even when sheet measurements are correct.
Before you print: a practical checklist
- Check stock compatibility. The package should specify support for your printer technology.
- Identify the sheet pattern. Look for label width, height, horizontal and vertical gaps, and margins.
- Choose the actual sheet size. US Letter and A4 are not interchangeable.
- Export the complete sheet as PDF. It is usually easier to preserve the physical dimensions than pasting artwork into a word processor.
- Print one test on plain paper. Place it behind a blank label sheet against a bright window and inspect alignment.
Troubleshooting labels that print off-center
If every label is shifted in the same direction, check your printer’s page setup, orientation, margins, and whether any automatic scaling option is enabled. If the shift increases farther down the page, verify the label pitch (label height plus vertical gap), paper feed settings, and paper stock. Do not compensate for an incorrect sheet geometry by randomly moving one text box.
Ink smears or does not dry
Choose material formulated for your printer type. Inkjet ink and laser toner bond differently. Allow inkjet sheets to dry before stacking or applying labels, particularly on glossy surfaces.
Labels peel or wrinkle
Clean the application surface, allow it to dry, and apply from one edge toward the other. Curved jars and bottles may need a thinner, more flexible label material.
A quick validation run
- Print one unscaled sheet on plain paper.
- Check top-left, bottom-left, and bottom-right alignment; these points reveal both margin and pitch errors.
- Load the correct stock using your printer’s recommended paper path.
- Print one final sheet before running a large batch.
